Author Last Post
Maurice,

Jonathan is looking for the trailer handbook. Will advise when/if it surfaces.

Mark,
Send me the make and model of the trailer and I will find out some information from a local trailer dealer. Also,
what town do we store the trailer in? I'll find out about the 6" vs 5" wheel size and also the jack type so we can make an informed decision.

Maurice, As a continuing BOD member do you want to take on this project?  Needs to be completed before end of 2015.  Remember that to extend the life of the new wheels/tires it is not intended that we fit them any earlier than a day or two ahead of when the trailer rolls out for the GMR.

I would suggest consulting a local trailer sales facility, not just to get an experts opinion and estimate but perhaps for the higher expense of  shopping local, they would also commit to doing the tire change over for us for little or no extra fee (and the short term wheel storage).

As I new member I am unfamiliar with the Club's trailer, so you'll please forgive the following if these ideas are already implemented.

Most trailer wheel mishaps are due to overlooking 2 common maintenance items....
• Air pressure - A pump with a pressure gauge would be nice. Then the tire pressure should be posted in a prominent position within the trailer.
• Wheel bearing grease - Best to fit the trailer wheels with those "boat trailer" type grease caps so that they can be easily lubed after sitting for extended periods.

Bill Gould and I went to the trailer after the meeting Saturday.  One of the things we wanted to confirm is the size of wheel/tire we need to buy to uses as running wheels for the trailer.  The idea being that we will use the existing wheels when the trailer is laid up between events so that we get the maximum possible life out of our new purchase.  We will buy five wheel/tire combinations so that we can carry a spare, and also jack, chocks and lug wrench.

WHEELS/TIRES

The wheels are 15” dia., 5 bolt pattern at 4.5” pitch, 5” rim width.

The tires are ST205/75R15D, where D represents the load rating (relatively high).

I have reviewed options and have a dilemma.  For the size/rating of tire we have all the wheel/tire combination vendors are suggesting either a 5.5” or 6.0” rim width, with the latter being the most common recommendation.

Here is a representative example of choices (I have specified a radial tire construction for durability).  The prices are consistent with other vendors:

WHEELS/TIRES QUESTIONS

Is there any reason to believe that the 6” rims will cause fitting/clearance issues?

If so, what can I do to check out the matter, measurements etc., before ordering

JACK

We also need to buy a trailer jack.  The large footprint jack/jackstand combination units seem to be the best option.  This 18-3/8" Lift - 4,000 lbs one here looks like to would be good:  http://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Jack/Powerbuilt/ALL620470.html

JACK QUESTIONS

First, is the jack above a good choice?  If not, please let me have some guidance.

I have never need to use a jack on a box trailer so do not know whether the jacking point is on the frame or the underside of an axle.  The lowest height of the jack above is 8-5/8".  Is this likely to be low enough?  If a concern, what can I do to check out the matter, measurements etc., before ordering?

OVERALL

Anything else I should check before ordering wheels/tires and jack?
